LeMoyne-Owen College has been described as a 'beacon of hope' for first generation college students. It was founded in 1862 and has produced scholars, educators, healthcare professionals, elected officials, business and community leaders.
According to a news release, the historically black college and university (HBCU) graduated 104 students on May 11th.
This year's commencement was held on the front lawn of Brownlee Hall.

"We are immensely proud to celebrate the achievements of the 154th graduating class of LeMoyne-Owen College," said interim President Dr. Christopher B. Davis. "This ceremony not only signifies the academic accomplishments of our students but also underscores our commitment to providing a transformative educational experience that prepares them for success in their future endeavors."
In 2023, LeMoyne-Owen College named Dr. Christopher Davis as interim president. Dr. Davis is a member of the board of trustees and is serving until a permanent president is hired.
"The class of 2024 holds a special place in our hearts as we lovingly refer to them as 'our COVID babies'," remarked interim President, Dr. Christopher B. Davis. "Their academic journey began amidst a pandemic that disrupted plans, placements, and priorities. Despite the obstacles they faced, they chose not to postpone their educational pursuit, but instead forged ahead with magic and resilience."
Various graduates of distinction were acknowledged including Chido Chimbetete - the 2024 Class Valedictorian.
"Embrace leadership without fear, seize every opportunity that comes your way, and welcome change as a catalyst for growth," said Chimbetete.
