Writing by Design Media Staff

The Memphis Branch of the Association for the Study of American Life & History (ASLAH) is set to honor "The New Tri-State Defender" at 3:00 p.m. at its virtual Black History celebration. The theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.

According to the website, ASLAH was founded in 1915 to recognize the accomplishments of blacks. Carter G. Woodson, founder of ASLAH and Negro History Week wanted to promote the achievements of blacks.

In 1926, Woodson started Negro History Week, which has evolved into Black History Month since 1976.

The New Tri-State Defender was founded in 1951 in Memphis. Since that time it has been the voice of the African American experience. The founder was John H. Sengstacke, owner of The Chicago Defender.

The virtual celebration will honor Ethel Sengstacke, Towanda Peete Smith, Calvin Anderson, and Hiram Jackson.
