Inaugural ceremony for Dr. Vernell Bennett-Fairs - LeMoyne-Owen College president

According to a news release, LeMoyne-Owen College board of trustees will celebrate the inauguration of the 13th president, Vernell Bennett-Fairs, Ed.D on May 5, 2022.

As a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), the institution has served the needs of many individuals and notable Alumni in the Memphis area. Many are serving in healthcare, business, leadership, journalism, education and government.

Dr. Bennett-Fairs began her journey on Jan. 5, 2021, in the midst of the pandemic.


“After a full year of Dr. Bennett-Fairs’ leadership and COVID-related restrictions, we are excited to formally and safely inaugurate our president,” LOC Board of Trustees chair, Patricia Covington says. “LeMoyne-Owen College continues to advance in the community and beyond, and we are ready to celebrate our new leader and the possibilities to come.”

There will be a celebration of events which includes a leadership symposium and technology event at the National Civil Rights Museum from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. May 4th.



On May 5th, the inauguration (investiture) will take place on the lawn of the College’s historic Brownlee Hall at 5:00 p.m. located at 807 Walker Ave.

A formal gala will be held on May 6th to culminate the celebration with celebrity host and actress - Malinda Williams and performances by Freddie Jackson and Midnight Star at The Columns at One Commerce Square.
